Our Story

Devi was founded by Neal and Ronuk Patel. Two brothers from the Chicagoland area with a deep passion for cannabis. Growing up immersed in hip-hop and skateboard culture, the brothers were first introduced to cannabis through their circle of friends. It didn’t take long before the brothers started seeking out the best herb to smoke on.

Becoming connoisseurs was just a natural progression. Hunting strains from all over the country and growing them became an art form. Destiny started to play out as all roads lead the brothers to partner together and move to Humboldt county, a region known as the “Emerald Triangle” famous for cultivating the best herb in the world and the brand Devi was created.

Devi /ˈdāvē/ pronounced “DAVEY”, is an ancient Sanskrit word that translates to GODDESS. A word that encompassess our Indian heritage and the divine power that is in the female cannabis plant. The highest quality cannabis “sensimilla” comes from the seedless female plant form, so the name Devi was the perfect fit. Cannabis is deeply embedded in the history and culture of India, growing naturally in the Himalayas. It has been used for thousands of years in both Ayurvedic medicine, and smoked as “charas” a form of hand-rolled hash by sadhus.

The purpose and mission had become clear to share their passion by blending their cultural roots with cultivating the highest quality natural Humboldt-grown cannabis. In 2018, Devi was recognized as one of the best cultivators in California after taking home 3rd place at the Emerald Cup. The art of selecting genetics and Devi’s natural cultivation process, creates the finest connoisseur experience…the all-natural way.

Cannabis and India

Deep in the majestic Kush mountains of India, cannabis has a rich and longstanding presence in the cultural fabric of the region. The use of cannabis, known as “ganja” or “bhang,” holds deep historical and religious significance in Indian traditions, where it has been celebrated for its spiritual, medicinal, and social purposes.

In Indian culture, cannabis has been intertwined with spirituality for centuries. The ancient texts, such as the Vedas and the Atharva Veda, mention cannabis as a sacred plant believed to have divine origins. It is often associated with Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism, who is believed to have a fondness for the plant. Devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Shaivites, consume cannabis as an offering during religious ceremonies and festivals, such as Maha Shivaratri.

Beyond its religious connections, cannabis has played a role in traditional Indian medicine, known as Ayurveda. It has been used for its therapeutic properties to treat various ailments and promote well-being. In Ayurvedic practices, cannabis is believed to possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties, making it a valuable herb in traditional healing practices.

In the Kush mountains, cannabis has also been an integral part of social gatherings and celebrations. The consumption of bhang, a cannabis-infused drink, is particularly popular during festivals like Holi and Baisakhi. These festivities involve the consumption of bhang-based sweets and drinks, fostering a sense of community, joy, and merriment among participants.

While cannabis laws in India have evolved over time, with varying degrees of regulation and prohibition, the cultural significance and acceptance of cannabis in the Kush mountains continue to endure. The plant’s connection to spirituality, traditional medicine, and social customs ensures its continued presence in the cultural fabric of the region.

As the world grapples with shifting attitudes toward cannabis, understanding its deep-rooted cultural significance in the Kush mountains of India serves as a reminder of the diverse ways in which this plant has been cherished and respected throughout history. It highlights the need for a nuanced approach to cannabis, recognizing its cultural heritage and exploring its potential benefits within a legal and regulated framework.
